Connect to: Chronicling America -- Historic American Newspapers
Producer: U.S. Library of Congress / National Endowment for the Humanities
Description: Ongoing project to "create a [free] national, digital resource of historically significant newspapers from all the states and U.S. territories published between 1836 and 1922."
As of October 2011, this site enables you to search and view over 4.1 million pages dating from 1859 to 1922 from 581 newspapers in 25 states and the District of Columbia.
The project also provides a comprehensive directory of historic American newspapers.
Usage Tips: Select one state (or all states) or one newspaper (or all newspapers).
Then, select a date, a range of dates, or all dates.

If you want to browse through pages of issues for the dates you want, you need not enter any terms within "Search terms."

If you want to view only pages containing specific words, enter one or more search terms under "Search terms." For example, to find entries mentioning either (or both) of the words "lexington" and/or "rockbridge," enter lexington rockbridge on the line labeled "...with any of the words."
The results of your search will display pages with your search term(s)highlighted.
